Cookies - General Information

Cookies are small pieces of text that a Web site can store on your computer and recover later. Session cookies only last as long as you are logged in or have your browser open. Permanent cookies are stored on your disc, and so remain available the next time that you use your browser.

They store information either that you have previously supplied to the site that set the cookie, or that the site creates for you - such as your session identifiers.

Cookies have various uses:

  • Cookies can be used to recognise you, which is what FileMaker Services require to do in order to maintain your log in. However, the aim of logging in to a Web site with an email login and password is to be identified.
  • Once you are recognised, a site can be personalised for you. Log into "My Account" and change your preferences.
  • Some sites may also show you information or adverts on subjects relevant to pages you have read previously, or offer you products related to those that you have previously bought. Whilst you may find this to be an advantage, FileMaker Services does not itself use this kind of "implicit" personalisation.
Cookies and FileMaker Services

Cookies are used at FileMaker Services for the following main purposes:

  • Your log-in session is maintained by setting cookies. Please ensure that you accept these cookies if you wish to register and/or log in to the site. If you are not logged in or registering, you may reject cookies set by this site if you prefer. However, session cookies should be accepted due to the functioning of this site.
  • In the discussion areas and forums further cookies are used to maintain your log-in session, and you should accept these if you wish to be able to use these areas.
  • Also in the discussions, cookies are used to record some information about the state of the discussions when you last visited. The aim is to be able to offer you quick access to the new postings when you next visit. These are permanent cookies. You can delete these cookies if you wish - it will just mean that the site cannot indicate new messages.

What the cookies set by FileMaker Services contain:

  • The authorisation ("log-in") session cookies simply contain numbers identifying you as an individual logged-in user. This avoids the need to send your user name and password every time that you request a page (which is what your browser does in many log-in systems); therefore, the aim is enhanced security.
  • Any preferences you change while viewing FileMaker Services may be stored in a cookie for reference later (such as text size). This is not personnaly identifiable information.
